Day 4 – Wild Horse Island Expedition on Flathead Lake on The Water
This morning, we’ll set off on a spectacular Montana experience — a private Wild Horse Island Expedition on Flathead Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. With its deep blue clarity and surrounding snow-dusted peaks, Flathead Lake feels almost otherworldly — a pristine remnant of the last ice age and one of Montana’s greatest natural treasures.
Our private boat will carry us across the shimmering water to Wild Horse Island State Park, a remote 2,100-acre island accessible only by boat. Once used by Native American tribes to keep their horses safe from raids, the island remains untouched wilderness — home to a small herd of wild horses, along with bighorn sheep, mule deer, bald eagles, and ospreys soaring overhead.
We’ll go ashore to walk the island’s scenic trails, exploring rolling meadows, pine forests, and open ridgelines with panoramic lake views. Trails here are gentle and flexible — you can stroll at your own pace, stop for photos, and take in the incredible sense of calm that comes from being surrounded by pure nature and silence.
Return to North Star Ranch by late afternoon for a relaxed evening among friends, watching the colors of the sunset stretch across the mountains.
Highlights
-
Flathead Lake: One of the clearest and largest natural freshwater lakes in the U.S., framed by the Mission and Swan Mountains — a breathtaking natural wonder.

Day 5 – Serenade on Water: Scenic Float the Middle Fork Flathead
After a leisurely breakfast and morning time at the ranch, we’ll head toward the water for a charming river experience that captures Montana’s quieter, reflective side. With the Glacier Raft Company, we’ll board a comfortable raft and drift along the tranquil waters of the Middle Fork Flathead River—an alpine watershed flowing through the heart of the wilderness of Glacier National Park.
As we glide downstream, our guide will share stories of glacial history, native peoples, and the pure ecosystem surrounding us. Wildlife is everywhere—keep your eyes open for bald eagles, osprey, moose along the banks, or even the rare bear in the dense forest.
This is your chance to slow down: no white-water rush, no adrenaline squeeze—but rather wide-open views, quiet forested banks, and the gentle rhythm of river and mountains. We’ll float for 2-3 hours together, giving you space to breathe, connect, and reflect.
In the afternoon, we’ll return to North Star Ranch for downtime, sharing photos and stories from this peaceful water journey, then enjoy a relaxed evening under Montana’s wide-open skies.
Highlights
-
Gentle River Journey: A scenic 2-3 hour float on the Middle Fork Flathead River—class I-II waters—ideal for soaking in wilderness rather than racing through it.
-
Wildlife & Storytelling: Guided by experts, we’ll learn about the river’s glacial roots, ecosystem, and keep our eyes peeled for eagles, moose, and forest life.
-
Mountain Waterscape: Experience the fresh air and shimmering river that flows from Glacier’s high peaks to the valley below—a rare glimpse into Montana’s natural pulse.
